Hacketts Cove, Novia Scotia

Yesterday’s visit to the Atlantic Sea Cucumber, Ltd. motivated us to take a look at the surrounding neighborhood. Hacketts Cove, Nova Scotia, is absolutely stunning.

Hacketts Cove and Peggy’s Cove are just down the road from Halifax.

Some photos from real estate sites….

William E deGarthe Memorial Monument

William E. deGarthe carved this “lasting monument to Nova Scotian fishermen” on a 30-metre (100-feet) long granite outcropping situated behind his house in Peggy’s Cove. The sculpture depicts 32 fishermen, their wives and children, St. Elmo with wings spread, and the legendary Peggy of Peggy’s Cove.novascotia.com

The memorial reads…..
This work of art is a lasting memorial to the gallant men of Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, who harvest our oceans. The monument depicts from left to right: Fisherman’s Family; Peggy of the Cove; Fishermen at Work.

This monument was donated to the Province of Nova Scotia by Mrs. P. Agnes deGarthe in 1984 in accordance with the wishes of her late husband, William E. deGarthe.

Peggy’s Cove

Peggy’s Cove was named after the lone survivor (referenced in the Fishermen’s Memorial) of a shipwreck off of Halibut Rock in the 1800’s. [ed. note: this place-name is spelled both “Peggy’s Cove” and “Peggys Cove”]

Artist and photographer Ivan Fraser, of Nova Scotia has written several books about Peggy of the Cove, and is the caretaker of the Peggy of the Cove Museum.

Will there be a Buffet? Let’s meet up at the Finer Diner!

The Finer Diner

We came upon The Finer Diner in Hackett’s Cove.

Looks like these guys have a pretty good sense of humor (from their web site).

They have the kind of menu where I want to rent a nearby AirBnB, and meticulously go through every appetizer, soup, salad, sandwich, main course, sides, desserts (oh… the pies! and the lemon lavender cheesecake!). And then work though the kids’ menu.

And then we move into their brunch menu.

Lobster mac-n-cheese? Seafood Chowder? Homemade biscuits? Poutine? Salmon Eggs Benedict? A menu item simply called “The Huge Breakfast?” Big Texas YES.
