Antarctica Rocks!

Randomly got to talkin’ with UC#2 about meteorites in Antarctica. This was the result of a semi-sequitur from a recent BLOTT about paper clips, and the earliest known archaeological connection between people and iron was from found meteorites.

Not knowing much about Antarctic meteorites, it seemed like an interesting BLOTT.

As it turns out, as it was meant to turn out, it was a fascinating journey.

Before we begin: a Semi-Sequitur

Type “meteorites” into Google, and cool stuff happens!

So What is a Meteorite?

For our observers of end-state capitalism….

The speed and force at which a meteoroid travels through the Earth’s atmosphere resulting in most of the rock burning off. Most meteoroids completely burn up upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere.

Of those that do survive, less than 5% of the original rock remains after impact with the ground. Meteorites on average, can range in size from dust grains to a small rock the size of a human fist.
Geography Realm

Of the 69,268 recorded meteorites in the Meteoritical Bulletin Database, 62.6% of meteorites have been retrieved from Antarctica.

It’s not that more meteorites land in Antarctica, statistically, but they are more visible (black rocks on white fields), and the dry and cold environment help preserve the meteorites.

Interesting meteorite fact: Of all the meteorites that have been discovered, it is estimated only about 100 rocks weigh 7 or more kilograms.

The Princess Elisabeth Antarctic Research Station

An official brochure (PDF) has more detailed info about the design and research, as well as some fascinating photos.

The Research Station was open to visitors before being shipped to Antarctica (Sept. 2007: 35,000 visitors in 4 days!).

Lots of cool rabbit holes can be found and the Station’s photo gallery:

A 7.6kg meteorite was recently found.

Will There Be a Buffet?

Who is Princess Elisabeth of Belgium?

WLBOTT Wonders? In Neal Stephenson’s Termination Shock, was the character are Frederika Mathilde Louisa Saskia, (the Queen of the Netherlands) based on Princess Elisabeth of Belgium?

Interesting note about the monarchy in Belgium….
