First grade – Montgomery, Alabama, no air conditioning but lots of fans. My parents bought us a set of children’s encyclopedias, and one had a picture of a Tarsier on the front. I remember being a little bit terrified, worried I would turn into one, and a little bit “let’s get one!”
Each of the tarsier’s eyes is the same size as his brain – they have the largest eye-to-body ratio of any mammal. These large peepers allow him to catch prey and avoid predators during his nighttime excursions in his native forests of Borneo, Sumatra and Belitung.

Tarsiers have a pretty eclectic pallet.
Eye-to-body Ratio
The tarsier has the largest eye-to-body ratio for mammals (even making it into the Guinness Book of Worlds Records), but not for the entire animal kingdom. That distinction goes to the Vampire Squid.
To confuse things, the Vampire Squid (ampyroteuthis infernalis) is neither a vampire nor a squid.
Vampyroteuthis infernalis, which means “vampire squid from hell.” But this name is misleading – it’s not a squid at all! It sits alone in phylum Mollusca as the only living member of the family Vampyroteuthidae. – Monterrey Bay Aquarium
