Ukraine’s Incursion into Kursk

On August 6th, 2024, Ukraine made a well-planned incursion into Kursk.

The Kursk Oblast (or state) is an 11,582 sq. mile area that borders eastern Ukraine. It has a population of just over a million, and has been populated since the last ice age.

On 6 August 2024, Ukraine launched an incursion during the Russian invasion of Ukraine and occupied parts of Kursk Oblast, Russia. Ukrainian forces captured several settlements, including the town of Sudzha.

History
On 15 August 2024, Ukrainian military commander Oleksandr Syrskyi announced the establishment of a military administration in occupied parts of Kursk Oblast to be headed by major general Eduard Moskaliov who would hold the title of military commandant. He also stated that 82 settlements in the oblast were now under Ukrainian control. Ukraine said it was “not interested” in permanently taking Russian land.[4] On 19 August, President Zelenskyy said that Ukrainian forces were now in control over 92 settlements in Kursk Oblast and 1,250 square kilometers of Russian territory.

The Bridges

Ukraine has destroyed a third bridge over the Seym River in the Kursk region, as part of an apparent attempt to expand what President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has described as a military “buffer zone” inside Russia.

According to Russian officials, the bridge in the village of Karyzh was damaged overnight by targeted Ukrainian “shelling”. It was the last major crossing on this part of the front, following the destruction on Friday and Saturday of two bridges further east over the same river.

Ukraine Strikes Bridges in Russia, Aiming to Entrap Troops
The attacks aim to destroy or damage crossings over a river in the Kursk region that are Russian forces’ only routes for resupply or retreat, military analysts say.

Russian troops defending a pocket of territory wedged between a river and the border with Ukraine were at risk of becoming encircled, military analysts said Monday, after Ukraine bombed bridges that are the only routes for resupply or retreat.

In their counterattack into Russia, which has been underway now for nearly two weeks, Ukrainian troops quickly broke through thinly manned border defenses, fanned out on highways and captured towns and villages, initially pushing deeper into Russian territory.

“Minus one more bridge!” the Ukrainian Air Force commander, Lt. Gen. Mykola Oleshchuk, wrote in a post on Telegram on Sunday.

Ukrainian forces on Friday destroyed a key bridge in Russia’s southwestern Kursk region, disrupting a link between Russian-controlled areas and those where Kyiv has made incremental advances, according to pro-Kremlin media and military bloggers.

Russia Has the Second Best Army in…. Russia

Yesterday, a £30million Russian Sukhoi Su-34 bomber jet was shot down and air fields were left ‘devastated’ by Ukraine’s biggest series of drone attacks since the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Col Nadiradze told the Daily Mail how sophisticated radar-jamming systems helped ‘dupe and nullify’ poorly-organised Russain forces in Kursk, allowing Ukraine to seize swathes of land.

‘We’ve got more than 2,000 Russian prisoners so far and they aren’t just conscripts, these are competent fighters, including FSB forces,’ he said last night.
