Tim Walz, Governor of Minnesota from the Midwest (and Kamala Harris’ pick for Vice President), has won competitions for hotdish recipes (tater tot casseroles) and has shared a couple recipes with everyone!

This tater tot casserole recipe is named New Ulm as it is a specific town in Minnesota, where he lives, and is also the location of the Schell’s brewery. So this specific recipe is a tribute to that area, using those ingredients.

New Ulm is Best City to Live in Minnesota!

Have you heard to news?! New Ulm was just named the Best City to Live in Minnesota! Our community of about 13,000 has been getting a lot of recognition lately as being a good place to live, and was also recently listed Best City in MN to Live in a USA TODAY article that came out in October 2018.

This latest study by 24/7 Wall Street looked at the nearly 20,000 villages, towns, and cities across the 50 states and recognized that not all are “equally conducive to the well-being of those who live there.” They created a weighted index of over two dozen measures to identify the top towns, including safe streets, a strong economy, affordability, and a range of entertainment options, among others factors. They published their list of Best City to Live in Every State and we’re honored that New Ulm was chosen as the best city in MN.

Hermann the German (Hermann Heights Monument)

Fall is your last chance before a winter break to climb a winding staircase up to the massive 4,000-pound monument that’s loomed over New Ulm since the late 1800s. A nod to the tribal leader (his real name was Arminius) who helped liberate Germany from the Roman Empire in 9 A.D., it’s long been considered a 102-foot beacon of independence and pride among Germans worldwide.

The Hermann Heights Monument is a statue erected in New Ulm, Minnesota, United States. The statue depicts Arminius (German: Hermann), an ancient Cheruscan, but locals refer to the statue as Hermann the German. The only National Register of Historic Places property of its kind in Minnesota, the monument is a remembrance of the German ancestry of many Minnesotans. Visitors to the statue can climb the spiral staircase to an observation platform at the base of the statue, which commands a view of the town and the Minnesota River Valley below.

Dang! Just missed it for 2024!
