WLBOTT Honors Nuns on the Bus

WLBOTT is very happy to celebrate Nuns on the Bus!

Nuns on the Bus is a Catholic advocacy group in the United States. Their name comes from the fact that they tour the country on a bus.

Led by Sister Simone Campbell, they place emphasis on the Church’s long-standing commitment to social justice. In different years, the nuns have tackled different themes.

[ed. note: I can’t think of a better recommendation than to be condemned by Benedict XVI. He seems like the kind of guy that would label the Sermon on the Mount as “woke.”]

The Nuns on the Bus were at one time criticized by the Vatican under Benedict XVI’s leadership for having “serious doctrinal problems” and “radical feminist themes incompatible with the Catholic faith.”

[ed. note: however….]

In honor of her advocacy work she [Sister Simone Campbell] was the 2014 recipient of the Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom Award, which commemorates the 1963 encyclical of Saint John XXIII of the same name.

Unfortunately, we missed most of the 2024 tour. Maybe next year?

Today’s Post

10/16/2024
Yesterday, Nuns on the Bus & Friends stopped in Las Vegas for a visit at Three Square, the only food bank in southern Nevada. We got a tour of the food bank where several staff taught us about their services, the unique challenges of the area, and their state and federal advocacy efforts.

The Reviews

Nuns on the Bus received mostly very positive, supportive FB reviews, like the following:

But the negative reviews are much more entertaining! Gee whiz, Wally, who do you think these people are voting for?

Sister Simone Campbell Meets Pres. Obama

Today, the President welcomed a special visitor, Sister Simone Campbell, the Executive Director of NETWORK, a National Catholic Social Justice organization which was founded by 47 Catholic Sisters over 40 years ago. NETWORK aims to organize and educate on important issues to promote a nation and world rooted in justice.

Sister Simone Campbell dropped by the Oval Office on day three of the latest “Nuns on the Bus” tour, which is focusing on the need for commonsense immigration reform. The “Nuns on the Bus” launched their tour from Ellis Island in New York City and will culminate on June 17th at Angel Island in San Francisco, highlighting the coast to coast beacons that have welcomed immigrants to our shores since the early days of our Nation’s founding.

About the Bus

The Nuns on the Bus & Friends two-and-a-half week, nation-wide Vote Our Future tour is our first in-person tour in six years. We’re excited to bring multi-faith and secular partners with us for the first time!

Nuns and their partners are rolling across the country — from Philadelphia to San Francisco — to call on Catholics and people of goodwill to be multi-issue voters for the common good. By voting on the many issues that impact our lives, multi-issue voters protect the freedoms essential to a future where everyone can thrive in an inclusive, multiracial, multi-faith democracy.

Informative PDF

The Sisters have an informative PDF that provides more detail about the bus, the mission, the motivation, and the riders.

Q: Why do Catholics, and especially Catholic Sisters, care about these issues?

A: Service and solidarity with people at the margins is central to the mission of Catholic Sisters. Catholic Sisters founded NETWORK in 1972 because they realized that the people they ministered with across the country were (and are) affected by policies made in Washington, D.C.

Both NETWORK and Catholic Sisters are rooted in the tradition of Catholic Social Justice, which emphasizes the dignity of every person, with no exceptions. […]. Driven by that core emphasis, NETWORK, Catholic Sisters, and our advocates communities alike are committed to advocating federal policies that uphold the dignity of all—through programs that promote accessible food and health care, affordable housing, a humane immigration system, an inclusive economy, safe and healthy communities, and more.
