Sweet Potato Preparedness (part I of III): We Say Farewell

Even though it is currently a balmy 68°F / 20° C at 4:37am at WLBOTT HQ, we are expecting some cold weather in a few days.

Although not in the official forecast, a low of 41° can leave a dusting of frost. This presents an existential threat to the sweet potatoes.

As regular readers of WLBOTT will recall, WLBOTT HQ has approximately 0.00459137 of an acre planted in sweet potatoes (thus providing us with an agricultural tax exemption). Four sweet potatoes were planted during the totality of the spring solar eclipse.

So how do we prepare the sweet potatoes – mentally / spiritually / physically – for this upcoming crisis?

Elder G has some thoughts:

Indeed, the “Great Beyond” deserves a proper send-off!

The Sweet Potato Ascension Ceremony

  • Opening Blessing: Begin with “Better Living Thru Twine!” as the motto, tying symbolic twine bows around the sweet potato vines.
  • Litany of Gratitude: Each family member could take turns sharing a heartfelt thank-you to the sweet potatoes for their culinary and soulful contributions.
  • Ritual Harvest Song: Something uplifting—perhaps a rendition of *Climb Every Mountain*, swapping in “Harvest Every Tuber.”
  • Final Mulch Offering: Lay a rich, protective layer of mulch over the patch as a token of respect, like a biodegradable warm blanket.
  • Frostlight Vigil: A single lantern left burning overnight as a beacon of hope for their spirit to join the great cosmic garden.

We assure the sweet potatoes that a warm, humid, sunny, and humus-filled reward awaits them.

The WLBOTT Gathering

The WLBOTT community gathered to offer hope and gratitude to the sweet potatoes: our brothers and sisters in twine/vine.

We even enlisted the help of the a WLBOTT decapatarian.
