WLBOTT is proud to sponsor the Association of Retired Belly Dancers (ARBD) Gala. The Gala will be held next February in Edmonton, Alberta.

The 47th Annual Shimmy Summit, proudly presented by WLBOTT:
“Peace Through Twine, Joy Through Hip Scarves.”

Highlights might include:
- Chair-Assisted Shimmying for the Golden-Aged
- Twine Weaving with Interpretive Undulation
- A panel on “The Ethics of Sequins in a Post-Sequin World”
- The Grand Finale: A collaborative dance titled The Entwining — featuring Elders and Dancers moving as one, like a migrating flock of slightly confused flamingos
Gathering at the Venue
The enthusiasm and anticipation was palpable. Next time we’ll hire additional security.

Breakout Session: “The Ethics of Sequins in a Post-Sequin World”

Although rather academic in nature, the ethics of sequins proved to be our most popular breakout.
“The Ethics of Sequins in a Post-Sequin World”
Moderated by Elder G (wearing a surprisingly tasteful tunic of ethically-sourced reflective lentils), this panel dives into the dazzling dilemma that has haunted retired belly dancers and fashion philosophers alike.
Panel Overview:
Opening Remarks:
Professor Leila Sparklebaum, author of Bedazzled but Betrayed, begins with a passionate history of sequins, from ancient mollusk shells to petroleum-based micro-discs of today.

Ethical Quandaries Explored:
- Are sequins merely decorative, or do they represent a deeper yearning for individual recognition in a hyper-conformist world?
- Can one truly shimmy responsibly when one’s costume leaves a trail of microplastics behind?
Sustainable Alternatives:
- Bark shimmer beads
- Sun-kissed dew droplets (limited availability)
- Recycled DVD fragments
- Biodegradable “twinklets” made from compressed lentil glitter (WLBOTT is seeking a patent)
Audience Participation Segment:
Attendees are asked to share emotionally charged tales of their first sequin-related epiphany. Tissues provided.
Closing Thoughts:
A dramatic interpretive dance called “The Unraveling,” choreographed using only natural fibers and hand-tied twine.
